Florida is known for being the largest producer of strawberries during the winter with the primary growing area being Plant City. They are available from November until April, with peak months of February and March. When picking strawberries make sure they are plump and firm. It is best to eat them the day of purchase. They can also be cooked into a sauce or jam or frozen for use later.
Blueberries are grown mostly in inland Florida counties. The blueberry is available from March until May, with peak-production in April. Blueberries, like all dark purple and blue fruits, are high in antioxidants, which help with the aging process. When buying they should be firm and brightly colored. Store blueberries with a damp paper towel in the package to keep them moist. They can also be stored frozen for up to six months.
